My private practice is a unique combination of specialization in neuropsychology -assessment, intervention and neurofeedback. I received invaluable training in the whole process of injury, impairment, and recovery at Santa Clara Valley Medical Center a rehabilitation center in San Jose, California. This early training focused on head injuries and working with stroke victims. Later I developed a strong interest in neurofeedback to assist clients who were experiencing a number of incapacitating symptoms.

My interest in neurofeedback developed after seeing the positive results that a client of mine experienced. I had worked with her over a period of several years in individual therapy. Throughout that time she had been medicated for depression and anxiety. Also, she and her husband had seen another therapist for couple’s therapy. After a break of a few months she came in again and as soon as she entered the room for the therapy session I was aware that in some way she had experienced a fundamental shift in her psyche. As I questioned her, I realized that the new intervention she had experienced was a series of neurofeedback treatments. The shift in her general attitude and approach to her life was so significant that I knew I had to learn more about neurofeedback. She was more available to experience her life in a way that the therapies and medications had not been able to assist. I saw immediately that the work could be extremely powerful technique to facilitate a healthier life for many of my clients. I was very excited to learn psychotherapeutic techniques. Since then neurofeedback as become an integral dimension of my therapeutic practice.

In 1999 Penel Thronson, Ph.D (cand.) and joined forces to set-up a neurofeedback training center, Davis and Thronson Associates in Larkspur, California.

Penel has more than 20 years experience in her psychotherapy practice,as a Marriage and Family Therapist, and as a Clinical Specialist in Psychiatric Mental Health Nursing. Her practice is built on a rich history in nursing, nursing education and extensive clinical work with persons challenged and compromised by significant life difficulties. Penel began introducing neurofeedback into her work when she saw its impact on the functioning and capacities of people and when she observed its ability to shift and transform
internal states that previously were only impacted by long years of intensive psychotherapy. She sees the possibility of neurofeedback to be a paradigm shifting one; from emphasizing deficiencies and illness to accenting learning and growth. It does this by assisting the brain to experience a new state and thereby training the brain to hold onto that state. Penel presently has a practice of psychotherapy and neurofeedback with both adults, adolescents and children.
